Emergency — phone the vet now
Within hours
Cat with string, thread, or tinsel hanging from mouth or anus
Visible string from mouth or anus is a linear foreign body emergency — DO NOT pull; cut visible end if practical and head to the vet now.
Recognise the signs
- String visible from mouth, gums, or anus
- Vomiting, retching
- Hunched, painful abdomen
- Off food
- Sometimes asymptomatic until obstruction develops
First aid steps
- DO NOT pull on visible string.
- If string is from the mouth, you may cut it at the lip to prevent swallowing further — ideally only if calm.
- Phone the vet immediately.
- Bring the cat in carrier.
Do NOT
- Do not pull on string from any orifice — it may be anchored in the gut and pulling can saw through the wall.
- Do not try to remove foreign body at home.
- Do not feed.

Frequently asked questions
Why must I never pull?
String can anchor at the tongue base or in the gut. Pulling can cause severe internal damage. The vet locates and removes safely.
How urgent is asymptomatic linear foreign body?
Same-day vet — even without signs, surgery is often needed before obstruction or perforation.
Can it pass on its own?
Sometimes, but the risk of perforation is too high to wait. Vet decides based on imaging.
