Monitor — routine vet appointment

Microchipping and keeping details up to date

Microchipping is legally required for UK dogs and cats; details must be kept current — use the database (Petlog, Identibase) to update after a move or rehoming.

DogCat

In the next 60 seconds

  1. Confirm microchip number from vaccination record or scan at the vet.
  2. Identify the database — usually Petlog, Identibase, PETtrac, or Animal Tracker.
  3. Update online or by phone after every move, change of phone number, or change of owner.

First aid steps

  1. Confirm microchip number from vaccination record or scan at the vet.
  2. Identify the database — usually Petlog, Identibase, PETtrac, or Animal Tracker.
  3. Update online or by phone after every move, change of phone number, or change of owner.

Do NOT

  • Do not assume vet records or insurance has updated the microchip database.
  • Do not delay updating after a move — lost pets get back faster with current details.

Prevention

  • Annual check that microchip details are current.
  • Update before any move, baby, change of phone.
  • Add a secondary contact (family member, neighbour).

Frequently asked questions

Is microchipping legally required?

Yes — dogs since 2016, cats since June 2024 in England (Scotland and Wales also have rules). Failure to microchip is a fineable offence.

How do I find which database my pet is on?

Vet can scan the chip and tell you the number; you can then check Check-A-Chip (UK) which directs to the right database.

Does a microchip track my pet?

No — chips are passive, only readable by scanner when the pet is found. They are not GPS.
